  86. WHAT IS 4FILES?
  87. ===============

  89.     4FILES is a multi-purpose file manager that also includes an
  90. editor for 4DOS & NDOS "file descriptions" and the ability to act
  91. as a "front-end" for your favorite utilities and application programs.
  92.  
  93.     4FILES is a DOS program, but it knows when it is operating under
  94. OS/2, Windows, DesqView, or DesqView/X.  In these cases it tailors its
  95. operation to take best advantage of the special operating system or
  96. operating environment.  OS/2 and Windows icons are provided.
  97.  
  98.     Command keystrokes are simple, to the point, and easy to remember.  A
  99. very efficient method of directory navigation is provided.  A built-in
  100. configuration routine makes on-the-fly changes of 4FILES' settings a
  101. simple matter, including changes to the "utility ports" (which are used
  102. to call your utilities and other programs), colors, and many custom setup
  103. choices.  International keyboards and character code pages are fully
  104. supported.  4FILES runs under DOS, Windows, OS/2 and Desqview, and was
  105. recommended by PC-Computing magazine in its 9/94 issue.

  107.     The 4FILES screen lists contents of the current directory with
  108. subdirectories at the top followed by files, each taking a full line.
  109. The list may be sorted any way you like, either on-the-fly or via command
  110. line switches. Except for sorts by file name (the default), the key field
  111. for the current sort is highlighted on-screen.
  112.  
  113.     File and subdirectory names are displayed on the left half of the
  114. screen, one per line, with full statistics.  The right half is space for
  115. descriptive file notes.  If you are using 4DOS or NDOS (superior
  116. COMMAND.COM substitutes), a file note will remain associated with its
  117. file during copy, move and rename operations.  4FILES works fine with
  118. COMMAND.COM too, except that your notes will be lost during the above
  119. file operations.

  121.     Full file management facilities are provided via mnemonic single-key
  122. commands for use on single files and marked groups of files.  These
  123. include file copy, move, rename, and delete; and directory create,
  124. remove, and rename.  There is also support for ZIP, ARJ, LHA and other
  125. types of file archives.

  127.     Any program file or batch file may be executed directly from the
  128. 4FILES screen, and any file or directory name can be quickly dropped into
  129. an editable DOS command line.  Also, "executable extensions" are
  130. supported, allowing you to load a data file into its associated
  131. application (such as Word Perfect or dBase) based on its file extension.
  132. You can also "shell" back to DOS while leaving 4FILES loaded; your place
  133. in 4FILES is saved.

  135.     There is an internal routine for branding this copy of 4FILES (or
  136. later copies you might obtain from bulletin boards or your vendor) with
  137. the serial number you will be given when you pay for your copy.  When you
  138. brand the program, the payment reminder screen will no longer appear.

  171.                 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR "4FILES"

  174. 1) Copy all files to a subdirectory that is in your PATH.
  175.  
  176. 2) Be sure you have a TEMP subdirectory defined, such as by a
  177.    "SET TEMP=C:\" line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  179. 3) Run 4FILES by typing 4F.
  180.  
  181. 4) Type <Alt><F10> to configure 4FILES.  You may define utility or
  182.    application programs that are called by certain 4FILES keys.  If you
  183.    use a laptop computer or have an old-style PC keyboard, be sure to
  184.    select your keyboard type from menu item "2. Options."  There are
  185.    many other configuration items that add great flexibility to the
  186.    program, change colors, or brand the program as registered.

  188. 5) 4FILES provides fast directory navigation as-is, but its capabilities
  189.    are greatly enhanced when teamed-up with change-directory utilities
  190.    such as LCD, ACD or Norton's NCD.  Configure 4FILES to use one of
  191.    these utilities, if available.
